About this Class | Week 3: Color

Young artists will explore ideas related to color as they create original works of art. We will connect our experiences to real works of art and to our emotions. Our hands-on class is divided into three activities with music and movement incorporated throughout. Students will begin with a color mixing exercise in watercolor. We will learn artistic vocabulary as we use primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors. Students will create a collage with transparent layered tissue paper to show how colors combine while creating a stained glass effect. Finally, we will create marbled paper to show our understanding of how colors can mix to create patterns. This class includes a color mixing activity snack so please let us know of any dietary restrictions.

Our inclusive, positive environment encourages each young artist to create without criticism. Artists will develop both fine and gross motor skills through the use of total body activities and focused work with age-appropriate materials. Open-ended activities ensure that students are not limited by adult expectations. Caregivers will support each young artist’s process while providing them space to explore their capabilities. We are always pleased to see how far children can push materials to create something that is all their own.

About the Creative Destruction Course:

Preschool artists will rip, smash, grind, and tear in this materials-focused class. Students will test the limits of a variety of art materials as they create original works of art. Our open-ended activities allow students to explore their creative capacity by focusing on process over product. Each session will include at least one make-and-take project.

About the Host:

Early Art FUNdamentals was founded by Emily Sabree, a working artist and mother of two young boys. Emily has a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a Bachelor's degree in Art. Although she left her ten year teaching career to pursue art full-time, Emily still enjoys fostering a love of art in young learners. Emily loves to paint figures and landscapes and she continues her study of art at the Art Students League of New York and shows her work through pop-up galleries and corporate installations.
